on Steve Haines Quintet: Beginner's Mind:

"Haines is a serious heavy-hitter. this disc, with deep solos and virtuosic interplay, is simply stellar."

SONG: A Whole New You,
Composed by Joel Frahm.
Arranged by Steve Haines.

This fast swinger is a great choice if your lead tenor player burns rubber. Originally recorded by Joel Frahm, Kenny Baron, Rufus Reid and Victor Lewis on We Used to Dance, this chart was arranged into large jazz ensemble in 2009. Reminiscent of Thad Jones’ Little Pixie II, the tenor soloist plays all by himself against cupped brass. This chart will be a huge challenge to your lead tenor player, and to the rest of the band. It also features drums. The range of the lead trumpet is a written G above the staff. There are no doubles for saxophones (a,a,t,t,b), four trumpets, and four trombones, along with guitar, piano, bass, and drums. (4:30)

SONG: Gospel,
Composed by Seamus Blake.
Arranged by Steve Haines.

This is an Aretha Franklin style, slow, bluesy gospel tune in 3:4 time. It features the lead tenor saxophone, as it was first performed by Seamus Blake and the UNCG Jazz Ensemble. The range of the lead trumpet is a written G above the staff, and features lots of plunger work by the brass. There are no doubles for saxophones (a,a,t,t,b), four trumpets, and four trombones, along with guitar, piano, bass, and drums. On the original recording, a Hammond B3 replaced the piano, which is an option, too. Gospel begins bare bones and boils to a rousing finish, it’s an extremely satisfying piece to play. (7:00)

SONG: Blues for Bulgaria,
Composed by Peter Bernstein.
Arranged by Steve Haines.

Looking to challenge your university band to play a blues in a different key? Originally performed by guitarist Peter Bernstein and the UNCG Jazz Ensemble, this is a Gb major medium-slow blues. The tune itself is highly lyrical and catchy. Peter Bernstein, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Greg Hutchinson on Criss Cross’ Signs of Life first recorded it. This chart features guitar and alto saxophone. The range of the lead trumpet is a written G above the staff. There are no doubles for saxophones (a,a,t,t,b), four trumpets, and four trombones (the trombone 4 part is optional), along with guitar, piano, bass, and drums. This is truly a crowd pleaser and your band will love the very unique and swinging groove. (7:00-9:00)

SONG:
Canada’s Ocean Playground,
Composed and arranged by Steve Haines.
(8 Brass) This tune was written to depict the powerful tides of Nova Scotia, Canada. The melody and soprano saxophone solo are set in 3:4, with a slow, grinding groove a la Elvin Jones. Midway through the composition, the soprano and tenor saxophone tangle together before the tenor breaks away in a new key and time signature 4:4. The solos are set in a long minor blues form. The climax occurs with a vamp for the ensemble while both the soprano and tenor battle it out together. A fun chart for any college or university band. Soprano saxophone instead of alto 1 part.

SONG: ALL UP IN THE AISLES,
Composed by John Ellis.
Arranged by Steve Haines.

This is a gospel infused, groove based odd meter tune that personifies John Ellis. A preacher’s son, Ellis’ Up in the Aisles is also cutting edge. This tune is perfect for any college or university band that is looking for negotiating odd meter improvising (oscillating between 7:4 and 4:4) in an bluesy church setting. Originally recorded by John Ellis and the UNCG Jazz Ensemble, the instrumentation is for five reeds (clarinet, alto, two tenors, and bari), four trumpets, four trombones, and rhythm section. There is a solo area for tenor saxophone I and piano, although anyone can solo. The lead trumpet range is a written high F.

SONG: L’Homard Bleu,
Composed by Mike Murley.
Arranged by Steve Haines.

This is the perfect choice for a high school big band who wants to focus on an exciting, riff based, medium Bb blues. Written in the Count Basie Orchestra style, it features both tenor players, along with trombone, although anyone can solo on this very flexible chart. The guitar part has specific instructions on how to propel the band forward with a Fred Green style. The climax featuring both tenor saxophonists, as they solo back and forth from one another. The Cobequid Educational Center Jazz Ensemble in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada commissioned this chart. The range of the lead trumpet is a written C above the staff. There are no doubles for saxophones (a,a,t,t,b), four trumpets, and three trombones (the third part can be doubled), along with guitar, piano, bass, and drums. (5:00-6:00)

SONG: Soul Mates,
Composed by Dan Haerle.

(10 Brass) (Level 4) This is an arrangement of a composition by Dan Haerle that is chalk full of optimism! Soul Mates was first recorded by the University of North Texas One O'Clock Band on Lab '99.
